— The difference

Why this route is different

The Bolivian Altiplano is not a checklist destination. It is a place that shifts your perspective. We designed this route so you experience it — not so you tick it.

Lake Titicaca
The world's highest navigable lake. 8,372 km² with its own microclimate.
10,582 km²
Salar de Uyuni
The world's largest salt flat. Holds 50–70% of global lithium reserves.
4,850 m
Sud Lípez
The highest accessible geothermal field in South America.
700 AD
Tiwanaku
One of the most significant pre-Columbian civilisations in the Americas.
50,000

— The stages

Five places, one route.

La Paz
3,640 m
La Paz
Bolivia's seat of government

The world's highest seat of government: 3,640m at the bottom of a canyon, ringed by 6,000m+ snow-capped peaks. La Paz is chaos and beauty in equal measure — the Witches' Market, cholitas in their layered skirts, the world's most extensive urban cable car system, and an emerging dining scene (Gustu, Ancestral) placing the city on the global culinary map.

10 urban cable car lines
Witches' Market on Calle Linares
Valle de la Luna — 10km from centre
Cholita wrestling: Thursdays & Sundays

Transition
Good balance
Rainfall decreasing. Mirror still possible in March. Mid-range prices. Good time to combine the salt flat with the southwest circuit.
May–Jul
Dry season
Recommended
Clear skies, firm and blindingly white salt flat. Cold nights at altitude (sub-zero). Best for the Sud Lípez circuit. High demand.
Aug–Oct
Late dry
Ideal
Milder temperatures than July. All routes open. Flamingos at Laguna Colorada. The most balanced time of year for this route.
Nov–Dec

— Altitude & health

The altiplano at 3.600–4.850 m.

Most healthy travellers adapt perfectly to the Bolivian altiplano with the acclimatisation days we build into the itinerary. Here is everything you need to know before you leave.

🫁
Arrive with time
Your first day in La Paz (3,640m) is for rest. No demanding activities. The body needs 24–48 hours to start producing extra red blood cells.
🌿
Coca tea
Coca leaves are the altitude medicine of the Andes, used for 3,000 years. A cup of mate on arrival and each morning works. Everyone drinks it — feel no self-consciousness.
💧
Hydration
At 4,000m the air is very dry. Drink at least 3 litres of water per day. Alcohol dehydrates especially at altitude — avoid it for the first 48 hours.
🚶
Slow pace
Walk slowly. Over-exertion in the first hours is the main cause of altitude sickness. The Bolivians know it well: "despacito".
💊
Acetazolamide
Diamox (acetazolamide) can prevent altitude sickness if taken 24h before ascent. Consult your doctor before the trip. Not mandatory but helps many people.
🏥
When to seek help
Headache, nausea and fatigue are normal in the first days. If you experience breathlessness at rest, confusion or ataxia, seek medical attention immediately.
