The Chiquitano Dry Forest covers approximately 150,000 km² of eastern Bolivia. It is one of the few large dry tropical forests remaining on earth — global deforestation has eliminated over 95% of this ecosystem type. Bolivia holds the largest surviving portion.
Beyond its extraordinary biodiversity, the Chiquitanía is home to the Jesuit Missions of Chiquitos — UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990. Six baroque churches built between 1691 and 1760 remain the spiritual centres of their Chiquitano indigenous communities.
The Jesuit Missions Circuit of Chiquitos is one of South America's most important cultural itineraries. Six towns, six churches, one style — Chiquitano tropical baroque.
The oldest of the six — founded 1691, rebuilt in its current form between 1749 and 1752. Architecture by Hans Roth, the Swiss architect who restored the missions in the 20th century.
