How Bolivia's destinations are organised
Bolivia has 9 departments and 11 distinct ecosystems that do not coincide with administrative borders. The Uyuni salt flat belongs to the Potosí department but its ecosystem is the southwest altiplano; Madidi is in the La Paz department but its ecosystem is Amazonian. There are destinations every traveller knows by name — Uyuni, Titicaca, La Paz, Madidi — and destinations that only emerge when someone with local knowledge points them out: the coloured volcanic lagoons between Uyuni and San Pedro de Atacama, the Jesuit missions of the Chiquitanía that rival any European cathedral, the Beni pampas where more capybaras live per square kilometre than anywhere else on earth. How to combine destinations without wasting time or forcing logistics
Bolivia's geography rewards certain combinations and penalises others. La Paz + Tiwanaku + Titicaca + Uyuni is a natural south-to-north altiplano arc that can be done in 10 days with coherence. La Paz + Madidi + Rurrenabaque + Uyuni in 10 days is logistically possible but forces two short internal flights and produces a rushed experience that does not do justice to either ecosystem. The most common mistake in self-planned itineraries is trying to combine the altiplano with the Amazon in under two weeks without understanding that the climate and physical transition between the two requires at least a day of adaptation.
